Happy/Sad: Drood Departs, Records Made, Britney?

Another big Broadway week... ups and downs... and in betweens...

THINGS THAT MADE ME "HAPPY" THIS WEEK

Donna as Drood

Donna Murphy!  Her birthday was March 7th.  I hope it was a great one!

Broadway Loves Britney!  OK, this actually happened last Sunday, but this week it hit YouTube.  Broadway stars did covers of songs by Ms. Spears.  Among others, Emma Hunton (Spring Awakening, next to normal (Tour)) does a scorching "Hit Me Baby One More Time."  And here's Mamma Mia's own scorcher, Zak Resnick, doing "Toxic/Cry Me a River."

Another Hellish Prom!

Life After New York!  I know some of you didn't love Carrie like I did, but it still pretty cool that now the show is having a life thanks to the recent revival.  And how cool that one of the first new productions is at a high school!  Why didn't my school get to do stuff like this?

Cast Recordings! I love it when shows announce their cast recordings... it hasn't even opened yet, but word-of mouth is pretty good on Kinky Boots.  I'm glad that no matter what the critics say, Cyndi Lauper's first Broadway score will be preserved.  Speaking of cast recordings...

THINGS "I COULDN'T CARE LESS ABOUT" THIS WEEK

Cast Recordings... Annie... why?  Can anything this revival has to offer come close to the original?  Is Katie Finneran's screechy turn as Miss Hannigan any match for the great Dorothy Loudon?  How about Lilla Crawford versus Andrea McArdle?  The ONLY reason this announced recording is even remotely necessary is that it will preserve Anthony Warlow's Broadway debut.  Otherwise... yawn...

THINGS THAT MADE ME "SAD" THIS WEEK

Drood closes today... My favorite of favorites, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, is closing today.  It was an amazing revival, perfectly cast and staged and so much fun.  What an absolute shame that this isn't drawing huge crowds so that it can keep running.  Despite critical acclaim, it just never took off at the box office.  I hope the Tony committe and voters don't forget the stellar work of all the leads and featured cast.  If there was ever another reason for a Best Ensemble Tony Award, the Drood cast is another argument "FOR."

I'd like to thank Eric Sciotto for his generosity of time, interest, and spirit of sharing.  And all FIVE of his interviews!  Until your next show...!
